Which office chair is right for you?

Quality of chair calculator: Number of hours per week at desk x weekly wage / 52 weeks = Ideal £ spend on chair

What level of office chair should you be purchasing for your staff? The regulations state that office (DSE) chairs should go up and down, have some adjustment to the backrest, have a five star base and most importantly the chair must be comfortable and suitable for the user. But office chairs vary in price hugely as do the needs of our employees. Here at DSE Solutions we rate office chairs in three categories; Grade A, B and C.

Grade A; being high end ergonomic chairs that not only provide excellent adjustability and comfort but they are also built to last. There are many different chairs available in this range and they start from £400 for a single chair.

Grade B; being good chairs with some adjustments to suit individual users. Again there is a wide range of choice here with very varied features and type of support, Grade B chairs start at around £200 for a single chair.

Grade C; being your standard office chair with very little to no available adjustments other than seat height adjustment and back height adjustment. All Grade C chairs are much the same and they start from as little as £50 for a single chair.

The longer we sit at our desks the more likely back, shoulder and neck pain is going to occur. Unless we think about what we are sitting on and does it suit our individual needs. But at one point should you be thinking it’s time to invest some money in better office seating? When you have key members of staff off work with chronic back problems or stress? When members of staff leave to join competitors because they feel undervalued? Try this calculator to work out what level of chair you and your employees should be using.

Number of hours per week at desk x weekly wage / 52 weeks = £ spend on chair

Example 1: 35 hours x £400/52 = £269 = Grade B Chair

Example 2: 35 hours x £600/52 = £403 = Grade A Chair

Example 3: 12 hours x 250/52 = £57 = Grade C Chair

· Please remember the most important factor is that the chair is comfortable and suitable for the user. It should fit their body size and very importantly if the user has any on-going discomfort, disability or injury then you must assess their chair needs more thoroughly. We will be more than happy to help you with this.
