Sudarshan Kriya

Sudarshan Kriya changed my life and probably saved it too!

My father had passed away very suddenly a few years earlier and being so young I had never dealt with it properly and it was causing me a huge amount of internal stress and anxiety. Combining this with very long work hours looking after elite athletes at the time, I was probably purposely not giving myself time to relax, spend time with family or to even think, it was far too painful. This all came to a head when I collapsed at work with severe chest pains and I was rushed to hospital with a suspected heart attack. It turned out to be stress related stomach ulcers, but they had also found some abnormal cells following a gastroscopy and biopsy, not great news at 28 years old. The doctors said my stomach looked like a watermelon. I was prescribed some pretty heavy medication and told to rest for 4 weeks and they would see me again to have another look in 6 weeks and do a second gastroscopy.

Well, I did rest but with my mother's advice I didn't take the medication. Instead, I took the Sudrashan Kriya course. Kriya is a series of incredibly powerful breathing techniques developed by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shanker Life | Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar . I have since had the pleasure of meeting and listening to this incredible man speak many times over the years and if you get the chance to you most definitely should.

Now I don’t want to give too much away as the experience is different for everybody and you should go on your own personal journey with Kriya. However, over the course of the weekend the stress and grief that I had locked away deep inside for the past eight years shifted. A little uncomfortable at first, even painful, but it shifted, and I would even go as far to say left my body. So much so when I returned to hospital for my follow up gastroscopy the doctors found no sign of anything, just a perfectly normal stomach. They scratched their heads a little and sent me on my way!

So many of my friends, family, clients, and athletes I have worked with have all taken the course and all the say the same, that it is truly amazing!

My mother, Ann Revington, continues to work for the Art of Living Foundation to this day and at the age of 76 has more energy than ever, running some an incredible programmes for people all over the world. including a truly  amazing mother and baby programme. I have also been fortunate to be invited to run a number of  exercise breathing courses for the foundation and I incorporate deep nasal breathing techniques to help my clients improve their posture and achieve their exercise/sporting goals. Whether it be to simply exercise for general health benefits or to achieve success at the highest level of sport.
